Sir Thomas Stanley

Sir Thomas Stanley, 1392-1463

The youngest son of Sir John Stanley (1340-1414) and Isabel Latham. His father had been Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and had been granted the Isle of Man.

Elford in Staffordshire was the birthplace of Sir Thomas Stanley (1392-1463). We know from the above sites and from other sources that Sir Thomas Stanley of Elford had two marriages.

The first marriage was in 1413 to Matilda de Arderne, daughter and sole heiresss of Sir John de Arderne of Elford (1378-1408). After the marriage he became lord of the manor of Elford, Haslowe, Clifton Campville and Pipe Ridware (all in Staffordshire), Sibbertoft in Northamptonshire, Echells (Northenden) and Nether Alderley in Cheshire and crucially Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. By her Sir Thomas Stanley had two children, Sir John Stanley (1423-1474) and Ann Stanley. See more about Sir John Stanley below.

Then there was a second marriage, this time to Elizabeth de Waller, daughter of Baron de Waller. They had two more children, George Stanley (1440-1508) and Elizabeth Stanley. George Stanley was the ancestor of the Stanleys of West Bromwich and was also Lord of the Manor of Hammerwich.

For more on the detail on the descendants of Sir Thomas Stanley and his wife Matilda de Arderne see this external site

He died in 1463 and was succeeded by his son Sir John Stanley.
