Samuel Stanley, Handsworth

Samuel Stanley was born and baptised in Chipping Norton in 1824, the son of Thomas Stanley and Elizabeth (nee Miles). He followed his father’s trade as a blacksmith but he didn’t stay in the town for long.

Samuel moved to Handsworth where he married a Chipping Norton girl, Mary Gee, in 1848. For a while I had presumed that the couple had eloped to Birmingham to get away from their families.

However it seems that Mary was not the only other one to have come up from Chipping Norton, I have found records that at least three brothers and one sister also migrated.

 

Samuel & Mary had the following children:

  • Kesia (1856 - 1920)
    Married Thomas Blunt, Birmingham 1880
    Their daughter Florence Blunt married John Bedwell and the couple have living descendants to the present day.
  • Albert (1858 - aft 1920)
    Little is known about Albert but we suspect he had a son Harry.
  • Annie Agnes (1861 - aft 1871)
    After aged 10 she disappears, did she marry & have a family?
  • Nellie M. (1865 - 1929)
    Married Jack Brown in Birmingham before 1886
  • Samuel John (1866 - 1931)
    My great-grandfather

 

Gee

The family moved to Ladywood in Birmingham and lived in Grosvenor St. West. They are listed there in the assessment for the relief of the poor through the 1850s and the early 1860s, Samuel still a blacksmith.

Just before 1866 the family moved around the corner to St. John’s Place off St. Mark St. West. One of their children born there was Samuel John Stanley (1866-1931), my great-grandfather. By 1891 Mary had died and Samuel, now a widowerer, was living with his daughter Nellie and her family at Hingeston Street.
